An Open Letter To Governor Mitt Romney By Gabor Zolna

An Open Letter To Governor Mitt Romney by Gabor Zolna, Western Center of Journalism

Governor Romney, the opportunity for you to save America slipped right through your fingers, not because of Hurricane Sandy and not because of the state of our economy. Sure, the Hurricane did not help you a great deal, but it could have if you would have said things about it that you did not say.

Obama appeared on the scene with Chris Christie for a photo opportunity, and Chris Christie by slobbering all over Obama did not do you any favors.  Nor did you do yourself any favors by not pointing out the fact that after Obama’s photo op, he jetted off to Las Vegas, leaving millions of Americans to suffer without electricity, food, water, and shelter.

There was a perfect opportunity for you to point out to the American people the many self-serving problems that Unions create, what with the Electrical Brotherhood Union’s of America turning away non-union electrical works, some that had traveled thousands of miles to try and reduce the suffering of the American people living in New York and New Jersey.

After your first debate with Obama, you sent the American people a very strong and powerful message, one that showed the American people that you are indeed in command of critical facts, coupled with your ability to appear presidential.  Unfortunately that’s where it all ended for you; and instead of continuing as an attack dog, you instead became a lap dog in both the second and third presidential debates.

There is no doubt that you were extremely successful as a businessman. Unfortunately, the skills required to be successful in business are not the skills required to win in politics.  There is an old saying which goes like this: “nice guys lose” (and without a doubt, you have proven yourself to be a nice guy, one that did indeed lose.)

I do not blame you entirely for your failure to secure the Oval Office. I put a great deal of blame on your chief advisers, since they too were likely not brought up in the streets of Chicago like the folks who supported Obama’s re-election machine.

I believe that America the way we all once knew it will soon be no more.  Obama promised to transform America, and he will continue to do exactly that.  In his process of transforming America, he will now completely disregard the Constitution, and our “Do-Nothing” Congress, will remain true to form and do nothing.

If a Congressional investigation is formed to determine who knew what when, with respect to Benghazi, and if it appears that both he and his Administration were unresponsive in providing military assistance, he will do as he did to protect AG Eric Holder and exert executive privilege to protect himself, Clinton, and Panetta.

I hope that the Republicans learned a valuable lesson: you cannot bring a poodle to a dog fight, not unless you want to end up losing your poodle.  In this case, we lost much more than a poodle; we lost our country.

Romney’s Failing Strategy of Attack

Romney’s Failing Strategy of Attack by Mark over at Mark America

For quite some time, Mitt Romney’s strategy has been to attack his opponents through surrogates, media shills, and advertising, but with few exceptions, while he has made a case against his opponents, sometimes less than honestly, he has failed to make a case for his own candidacy. Conservative voters are not herded by fear in most instances, and while you can occasionally turn them off from supporting a candidate if you can create enough of a negative buzz, what will not usually happen in such cases is to drive them into your own arms. This tactic works well when it’s a two-candidate primary, particularly with a mind-numbed lefty electorate, but in a four-way race with conservative voters, what can happen is what we have seen in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri: Mitt Romney has so thoroughly bashed Gingrich that he succeeded only in driving voters in those states to somebody else. Gingrich lost. Romney lost. Santorum won.

I think part of this grows out of Romney’s reliance on tactics that might have been valid in a more liberal state like the one he governed, where he could not gain victory without at least enticing some of a liberal mindset. In Massachusetts, there are certainly Republicans, but the conservative wing of the party is small and mostly ineffective. On a national scale, this is not true, and Romney will not be able to beat one conservative down without another rising in his place. Romney’s strategy may still get him the nomination by slow, steady attrition, but that will not win the general election in November when he will need the entirety of the nation’s conservative base out pulling his wagon if he is to have any hope of overcoming Obama. You cannot repeatedly offend conservatives and expect them to energize on your behalf, and this is what McCain had done over many years, and his best move was to nominate Sarah Palin, which was almost enough to overcome the ineptitude of his own campaign.

Thomas Sowell On Romney, Conservatism, & The Minimum Wage Law

Thomas Sowell On Romney, Conservatism, & The Minimum Wage Law by GW over at Wolf Howling

My own view of Mitt Romney is that he is a person who has mastered the vocabulary of conservatism in as much as a native speaker of English might master, say Mandarin Chinese. Romney speaks the language of conservatism with perfect diction, but it is obvious that he is not a conservative by nature. I pointed that out in response to his statement that he is not concerned with the poor. Today, Thomas Sowell makes the same point in his latest IBD column, finding Romney's statement that he would index the minimum wage law to inflation to be "defining." This from Dr. Sowell:

. . . Romney's statement about not worrying about the poor — because they "have a very ample safety net" — was followed by a statement that was not just a slip of the tongue, and should be a defining moment in telling us about this man's qualifications as a conservative and, more important, as a potential president of the United States.

What Obama Did to the Catholics- Romney Did It Too!

What Obama Did to the Catholics- Romney Did It Too! by Mark over at Mark America

As it now turns out, back in 2005 when Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts, he forced religious institutions including Catholic hospitals to dispense the so-called “morning after pill.” This is another bit of evidence as to how Mitt really isn’t a conservative, and how he really doesn’t care about religious liberties. I am exhausted with his posturing as a saintly man who abides his faith, but to put his stamp of approval on a law that deprives others of their recourse to conscience is a disgusting breach of the the Constitution. I don’t care to hear his pathetic states’ rights arguments, as they don’t apply in this situation, irrespective of his nonsense to the contrary. There’s something fundamentally wrong with a politician who thinks it’s his role to shove such provisions down our throats, irrespective of our wishes, and irrespective of the matters of conscience that collide in these issues. He’s only too happy to command you.

Why Mitt Is Desperate to Force Newt Out

Why Mitt Is Desperate to Force Newt Out by Mark over at Mark America

First, he called Adelson to convince him to stop adding financial support of Gingrich via his SuperPAC. When that didn’t work, he piled on some more of his own money, and those who fund the SuperPacs advocating on his behalf or at least slamming his competitors. When that didn’t work, some shills in the press dropped the conspicuous rumor that Newt’s “…hold a press conference after the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, raising new speculation about his future in the race,” implying he would get out Saturday evening. This was solely to try to undermine the vote in Nevada in Romney’s favor by creating the impression among Caucus-goers that Gingrich would be out of the race by night-fall anyway. You might wonder why Romney who is the putative front-runner, and his army of establishment hacks, would go through all this trouble if he’s got this “all sewn up,” as the “inevitable” meme pretends. The answer is as simple as this: It isn’t over, and Mitt knows it, because he can read a calendar.

Punching Bags No More

Virginia Goes Ron Paul- Confusion to the Enemy – Them and Us by Maggie over at Maggie’s Notebook

With only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul on the Virginia ballot, the plan to derail Romney is for you, there in Virginia, to cast your primary vote for Ron Paul, and deny Romney the electoral votes, but doing nothing for Ron Paul in the race to the nomination. The Conservative blogosphere is belching Romney-resistance.

The dawning of a third party…next time around, is on the horizon, with the naming of such a party being chatted. I favor The Conservative Party, which already has some presence as you can register as a Conservative in New York. But I digress. Not important at this moment. The point is, as Congressman Allen West said this week, Conservatives will no longer be punching bags for the establishment elite. Decades past time to stand on principle.

Dan Riehl is framing the argument: ”It’s insane for Conservatives to back Romney in the General Election.” Riehl will not vote for Romney.

My friend Reaganite Republican has a plan:

I’ll be quitting [the GOP] the day they coronate this scheming snake Romney. One hard-to-swallow strategy at that point would be to simply ignore the presidential contest this fall and fully concentrate on obtaining powerful congressional majorities to control and contain Obama (since Mittens is going to lose in the general anyway)… meanwhile, the investigations continue.

Hey GOP! Do You Hear Your Fed Up, Fired Up Base?

Hey GOP! Do You Hear Your Fed Up, Fired Up Base- by Janice Shaw Crouse over at American Thinker

In the view of many pundits, the GOP primary has boiled down to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich versus former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. But the consensus among numerous commentators is that former Senator Rick Santorum won the last two debates, and he has pushed ahead of Gingrich in some polls pitting various GOP candidates against President Obama.

Certainly, Santorum's performance in the Tampa debate earned him recognition as a contender. In one of the most prescient moments of the Republican primary, Santorum gave an impassioned explanation of why RomneyCare's role as the model for ObamaCare is the central issue for 2012. After Romney gave a tepid defense of his Massachusetts health care legislation, Santorum heatedly and powerfully attacked individual mandates and pointed out the similarities between Romney's and Obama's health care reform. Santorum bluntly declared that Romney's record on health care reform made him the wrong GOP candidate to put up against President Obama. It boiled down to, according to Senator Santorum, essentially surrendering the issue of our fundamental freedoms -- which is not likely to be acceptable to Tea Party activists, who are credited with enabling the Republican takeover of the House in 2010. Mr. Romney blew off the former senator's concerns: "It's not worth getting angry about."

Ann Coulter Lies About Romney-Care

Ann Coulter Lies About Romney-Care by Mark over at Mark America

It’s horrible when you realize that one who you had thought had been conservative makes a point of proving your belief wrong, while insisting otherwise. The meaning of the word “disappointment” hardly covers what has gone wrong with Ann Coulter’s writing over the last year, but when you realize that she has sidled up to the GOP establishment, the truth becomes undeniably clear. Proving that Ann Coulter is willing to forsake all her principles in favor of the latest establishment candidate, she has written a piece that is not only manipulative, but purposefully omits several important facts. Worse still, at one point, Coulter flatly lies, and no excuse of incomplete information can possibly cover it. Coulter wishes Three Cheers For Romneycare, but I know her cheers are really for Mitt Romney, and this cobbled-together nonsense constitutes a lie Ann Coulter ought not to have told.

Coulter couldn’t wait to posit the lie, but it’s such a well-known lie, she buried it at the end of a paragraph leaning on Rick Santorum for out-of-context, irrelevant support:

“Romney, incidentally, has always said his plan would be a bad idea nationally.”

This is demonstrably untrue, but what is stunning about this claim is the un-writing of history it proposes. My readers will doubtless remember the flap over the line pulled from the second printing of Mitt Romney’s book, where he originally made this very argument. This was of such controversy that it has been mentioned in the debates, so how is it possible that Ann Coulter ignored this while depositing this steaming pile in your midst. The original text of Romney’s book(H/T ABCNews) included the following text:

Mark Over At Mark America Talks About Thursday Night Debate

Thursday Night Debate by Mark over at Mark America

I was suspicious about this debate when I heard Tammy Bruce play audio on Thursday of Romney telling his supporters who couldn’t get tickets to shove their way in, so I wasn’t surprised to hear rumors as the debate wore on that the audience was stacked with Romney supporters. The scuttlebutt is that 900 additional Romney supporters were brought in by the Florida Republican party, but I’m looking for confirmation. It seems that the Florida GOP did control 900 of the 1200 seats, so if they wanted to rig it for Romney, they certainly could have, but as of yet, I have been unable to confirm that it was disproportionately given to Romney supporters, but the fact that the Florida party controlled them means it could have been.

If I had to pick a “winner,” I would say Rick Santorum, but that’s provisional, because I think while he definitely made some excellent points, and put Romney in the position of making an ass of himself, I also suspect most people didn’t catch one thing he said that would actually damn him in my book, and theirs if they thought about it. If I had to say who was most honest in this debate, I would say Ron Paul, followed by Gingrich and Santorum in a tie for second, with Romney getting the evening’s Pinochio award.

You might ask why I would give Mitt Romney such a distinction, but it has to do with what he said about his vote in 1992. In the primary that year, he voted for Paul Tsongas, in the Democrat primary, so I’m a bit confused about what he said during this debate. The other significant issue was his use of the whole Gingrich “ghetto” business in relation to language. What Newt had been discussing was that he didn’t want to see people locked into ghettos defined by language barriers because they had not learned English. It had nothing whatever to do with the Spanish language, or those who speak it, as Romney and his ad attempted to imply. These two lies were the worst among lesser ones, but definitely noteworthy.
