Chick-fil-A draws long lines locally for appreciation day by Justin L. Mack

On Wednesday afternoon, Lafayette’s Aaron Clark waited nearly an hour in the Chick-fil-A drive-through for an order of chicken nuggets and sweet tea.

But Clark didn’t sit in his hot sedan for 45 minutes with the air conditioning blasting and his seat reclined because he was hungry. He did it to defend free speech.

“He was simply speaking his mind. This is America, right? You are still allowed to do that, aren’t you?” he said. “I think that a lot of people feel the same way. You can tell from the long line here today.”

The “he” referenced by Clark is Dan Cathy, president of Chick-fil-A, who recently came under fire for comments he made about gay marriage.

Cathy told the Baptist Press last month that the Atlanta-based company was “guilty as charged” for backing “the biblical definition of a family.” That unleashed a wave of criticism from gay rights groups and others. There were calls for boycotts and talk of efforts to block the chain from opening new stores.

In response, supporters of Chick-fil-A organized an “appreciation day” at the chain’s restaurants across the country Wednesday.

The message certainly reached Lafayette. Cars stretched from the drive-through window to Indiana 26 for much of the day.

“We went out there because we think the food is very tasty and priced reasonably, and we support Chick-fil-A,” said Joseph Neville of West Point.

“That man was making a statement about what God ordained, and he is concerned about people shaking their fist at God and trying to redefine marriage. He is standing up to speak his convictions, not putting anyone down. Same sex relationships, that doesn’t bother me a bit, except it’s not marriage.”

Michelle Grovak of Brookston also had a lengthy wait Wednesday but said it was more than worth it.

“We thought it was important to make a stand. I was shocked to see the cars. We do eat there anyway, but we wanted to especially go today,” she said.
