With a bottle of Foster’s beer at his side, Mitch Daniels faced more than two dozen inquisitors consisting of Purdue University academics and support staff one recent evening at a professor’s West Lafayette home.

The questions were blunt and covered a range of thorny issues awaiting the two-term Republican governor who is set to become Purdue’s 12th president in a few months.

Well, Governor, what do you think about diversity, tenure and year-round classes? How about outsourcing, graduate student support and administrative bloat?

Daniels asked as many questions as he answered.
