This Is What Is Happening So Far In The Indiana’s Governor Race

INDIANAPOLIS — Republican Mike Pence and Democrat John Gregg reported strong bankrolls Monday as they head into a key stretch of the Indiana governor’s race.

Pence had $5.5 million in the bank as of July 1 and Gregg had $3 million, according to fundraising tallies for the three-month stretch from April through June.

Money will play a greater role in the months ahead as the campaigns begin spending more on campaign commercials. Pence spent $1.4 million on a trio of touchy-feely campaign commercials showing his courtship of his wife, his biography and a disaster in his hometown of Columbus.

Edwin Bender, executive director of FollowtheMoney.org, which tracks spending in state races nationwide, said Pence’s early spending on-air helped give him some “wiggle room” in terms of campaign options as the race stretches on. Bender also noted that candidates nationwide have shifted to more positive advertising as voters have begun tuning out negative advertising.
