Most individuals have experiences that pose a fundamental question about who they are. They go through life professing to believe in God or love or something; or else professing to believe in nothing much at all. Then they confront a situation in which they cannot escape a choice; where, by action or inaction they will declare to all the world, or to themselves and God alone, the truth or falsity of what, inwardly or outwardly, they have professed to be.

 

Particularly in such matters of character, I agree with Theodore Roosevelt that some observations are “… true of the Nation, as of the individual. …” From the outset, the United States has professed to be a nation that holds certain “truths to be self-evident,” as our Declaration of Independence says. Of course, if there is no truth, there can be no self-evident truths. Among the self-evident truths is the notion that we are “created equal.” Of course, if there was no creation, we are not created, equal or otherwise.

 

Thanks to the same profession of self-evident truth, we are a nation that relies on the concept of human rights. These rights do not depend on human will, judgment, power or legislation because they are a natural endowment, gifted to us in our very nature by the Creator who proclaimed the “… laws of nature and of nature’s God.” But of course, if there is no God, then …

 

I know from firsthand experience that, years ago, guides at historic sites maintained by our National Park Service stopped quoting such God acknowledging phrases from the Declaration of Independence. I’ve noticed, too, that when July 4 rolls around, the elitist faction’s blaring media touts it as “Independence Day.” They neglect to mention that July 4 is not the date Congress voted to approve the resolution that declared the nation’s independence (that’s July 2). It’s the date on which they approved the words of the Declaration of Independence and authorized its publication. It seems that our God-rejecting elites would rather we didn’t dwell too much on the words of the Declaration. But if there is no Declaration of Independence, what becomes of our claim to God-endowed unalienable rights; and a government dedicated to securing those rights, that derives its just powers from the consent of the governed?

 

It’s always worth noting that through all the centuries when God or the gods were held up by powerful elites to validate their claims of power, it didn’t occur to them to drive all talk of divine authority away from the precincts of government. But since the logic of Christ’s influence opened human minds to God’s empowering love, even for the weakest and poorest of those who truly acknowledge Him; and since he offered the way for everyone to lay claim to true self-government; the “superior people” have decided to tap the undercurrent of God-rejecting atheism. They were more than willing to suppress it as long as superstition and error made divine authority a bulwark of their domination. As it became instead a burning light of truth, revealing the arrogance and abuse inherent in that domination, well, I guess God just became too embarrassing to keep around.

During the GOP primary season, people vying to be the Republican nominee for this or that office in most parts of the county will routinely give pro-forma respect to the republican ideas of America’s founders and posture as champions of the Constitution framed in light of those ideas. Especially when attacking their Democratic opponents, most will pose as champions of liberty, free enterprise and limited government. Such posturing makes sense as a matter of purely selfish political calculation since the overwhelming majority of the GOP’s voter base consists of pro-American patriots (as evidenced by the conservative tone of the GOP platform).

 

Yet despite the rhetoric they cynically deploy to manipulate their party’s pro-American constituency, these days most GOP politicians are pressured into acting on an understanding of politics that fundamentally rejects the republican concepts of the founders. As I have elsewhere discussed, America’s founders acted on the assumption that justice is the end or aim of human society and government.

 

“It may accurately be said that the people most responsible for the American founding were obsessed with justice. They saw it as the overriding purpose of political life, to which the freeways of passion would ultimately be forced to submit. But if, by deliberation, people recognize and submit to its requirements, their freedom of choice becomes the basis for government, rather than forced submission. The extent and degree of their self-determination with respect to the requirements of justice establishes the extent of individual freedom in their society. In this respect, the more good individuals are willing to do of their own volition, the less the force of government will be called upon to do for them. Conversely, the less justice they reflect in their individual choices, the more the force of government will be called upon to dictate and impose upon their actions. Freedom depends on individual responsibility. ”

 

As stated in the Declaration of Independence, the republican ideas of America’s founders start from the premise that human beings are creatures of God, naturally governed by laws that reflect the will of their Creator. They are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights, which are the routines of natural conscience (i.e., knowledge inherent in the way they are made; the special information by which the activities that correspond to their particular way of being are revealed; the program or choreography of the movements by which God intends to dance His way through their existence) by which reason promulgates those laws to all humanity. As they are translated into action, the routines of natural conscience constitute the exercise of natural liberty in which each and every human being peacefully does and/or enjoys all that the Creator’s law for their nature makes it necessary and appropriate for them to do or to enjoy.

"Color Blind Racism" was the title of a recent article in the Henry Louis Gates, Jr. on-line publication, The Root. If you recall, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. last appeared on this blog for his unsubstantiated charge of racism against a policeman for following protocol, and The Root was last seen here for its list of blacks whom they would like to see erased from history. The list was a who's who of murders, cannibals and despicable people, and included both Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and right wing black politician Alan Keyes.

 

So what is "color blind racism?" According to The Root, it is "a racial ideology that expresses itself in seemingly nonracial terms. As such, it is most practiced by people who never see themselves outside their own myopic worldview. " What that means in practice is a redefinition of racism from its actual meaning, a belief that a particular race is inherently inferior, into a wholly new arena, where, mirabile dictu, criticism directed towards blacks, and indeed, the mere mention of any inconvenient fact, is inherently racist. The "Orwellian term, 'color blind racism.'" is, as James Taranto at the WSJ describes it, "the pithiest summation we've ever encountered of the absurdity of contemporary left-liberal racial dogma."
