Local unemployment is down from last month, according to new figures released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

In the Lafayette metropolitan area, the unemployment rate was 7.4 percent in August. That’s 0.3 percent lower than the revised figure for July and 1 percent lower than it was during the same month last year.

The state didn’t fare as well. Indiana’s unemployment rate was 0.2 percent higher in August than the U.S. average.

“As I talk to people in the community, people generally feel the economy is improving slowly,” Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski said. “We’ve had some wonderful success stories here in the last six months. At most of our local businesses, everyone is working together to move forward.”

The Lafayette metropolitan area’s workforce is about 1,000 people smaller than it was last month. There are about 450 fewer unemployed people. Unemployment in Tippecanoe County was 7.2 percent in August compared with 7.7 percent in July.

Local unemployment levels could be on their way down even further in coming months as Nanshan America Inc. continues to hire its workforce, Roswarski said. The plant could be partly operational by December.

The company’s workforce of 60 employees should expand to 200 by 2013, according to an economic activity report released this month by Greater Lafayette Commerce.
