In honor of an international showing of peace, a Lafayette church gathered Sunday night to share their message with the community and discuss potential solutions to conflict.

The Lafayette Church of the Brethren held a Prayer for Peace event open to the entire community.

The event was held in recognition of the United Nation’s The International Day of Peace which is on Friday. The theme of this year’s Peace Day is “Praying for Ceasefire.”

The event also was being held in the wake of Kyle Osborn’s death. Osborn, a 26-year-old Clarks Hill native who served in the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, was killed Thursday in Afghanistan after insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

He is Greater Lafayette's 12th member of the military to die in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since the conflicts began following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

Kyle Osborn’s mother, Miriam Osborn, was member of the Lafayette Church of the Brethren, and Kyle Osborn was once a member of the church’s youth group.
