The Doña Paz

The Doña Paz was built in 1963 by Onomichi Zosen of Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan. The Doña Paz was originally named Himeyuri Maru. During the time it plied Japanese waters, it had a passenger capacity of 608 people. In 1975, it was sold to Sulpicio Lines, a Filipino operator of a fleet of passenger ferries. It was renamed by Sulpicio Lines as the Don Sulpicio, and later, the Doña Paz.

M/T Vector, owned by Vector Shipping, Inc., at that time was on a charter voyage for Caltex Philippines, now Chevron.

On December 20, 1987, at 0630H, Philippine Standard Time, the Doña Paz disembarked from Tacloban City, Leyte, for the Philippine capital of Manila, with a stopover at Catbalogan City, Samar. The vessel was due in Manila at 0400 the following day, and it was reported that it last made radio contact at around 2000. However, subsequent reports indicated that the Doña Paz had no radio. At around 2230H, Philippine Standard Time, the ferry was situated at Dumali Point, along the Tablas Strait, near Marinduque. A survivor later said that the weather at sea that night was clear, but the sea was choppy. While most of the passengers slept, the Doña Paz collided with MT Vector, an oil tanker en route from Bataan to Masbate. The Vector was carrying 8,800 barrels of gasoline and other petroleum products owned by Caltex Philippines.

Upon the collision, the Vector's cargo ignited and caused a fire on the ship that spread onto the Doña Paz. Survivors recalled sensing the crash and an explosion, causing panic on the vessel.

One of them, a passenger named Paquito Osabel, recounted that the flames spread rapidly throughout the ship, and that the sea itself was on fire. Another survivor claimed that the lights onboard had gone out minutes after the collision, that there were no life vests on the Doña Paz, and that none of the crew was giving any orders. It was later said that the life jacket lockers had been locked. The survivors were forced to jump off the ship and swim among charred bodies. The Doña Paz sank within two hours of the collision, while the Vector sank within four hours. Both ships sank in about 545 meters of water in the shark-infested Tablas Strait.

It reportedly took eight hours before Philippine maritime authorities learned of the accident, and another eight hours to organize search and rescue operations.

Those who buy into well packaged deception in every arena are the most gullible and subject to becoming enslaved by the deceiver. The devil thrives on souls who believe his lies. He is the ultimate bait and switch master; The sleight of hand expert that uses diversion to mask his every evil move.

The deception most easily missed is when he uses perception distorted by his lies to cause his people to follow his unwitting minions to perdition.
He uses distorted eschatology to deceive. Many of the most deceived are those who have bought into a picture formed by intense dispensational interpretation. Rejecting all dispensational teaching without recognizing the historic patterns of deception by the enemy is an opposite and equal deception.

Deception can be trust in a man. God spoke thru his prophet Jeremiah 17:5

This is what the LORD says: "Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the LORD.

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.

²This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.

³In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,

⁴for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

⁵Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

⁶This is the one who came by water and blood —Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

⁷For there are three that testify:

⁸the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.

⁹We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.

¹⁰Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.

²⁰We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

¹⁸Because the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah’s sons and brothers, 18 in all;

¹⁹and Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and nephews, 20 in all.

²⁰They also brought 220 of the temple servants —a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered by name.

²¹There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.

²²I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him. ”

²³So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

²⁴Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah, Hashabiah and ten of their brothers,

²⁵and I weighed out to them the offering of silver and gold and the articles that the king, his advisers, his officials and all Israel present there had donated for the house of our God.

²⁶I weighed out to them 650 talents of silver, silver articles weighing 100 talents, 100 talents of gold,

²⁷20 bowls of gold valued at 1,000 darics, and two fine articles of polished bronze, as precious as gold.

²⁸I said to them, “You as well as these articles are consecrated to the Lord. The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the Lord, the God of your ancestors.

²⁹Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem before the leading priests and the Levites and the family heads of Israel.”

³⁰Then the priests and Levites received the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.

³¹On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way.

³²So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days.

³³On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we weighed out the silver and gold and the sacred articles into the hands of Meremoth son of Uriah, the priest. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him, and so were the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.

³⁴Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the entire weight was recorded at that time.

³⁵Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven male lambs and, as a sin offering twelve male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the Lord.

³⁶They also delivered the king’s orders to the royal satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, who then gave assistance to the people and to the house of God.

Fred and Adele followed up with several more shows, and of their work in “The Passing Show of 1918”. Heywood Broun wrote: "In an evening in which there was an abundance of good dancing, Fred Astaire stood out ... He and his partner, Adele Astaire, made the show pause early in the evening with a beautiful loose-limbed dance."

Astaire's dancing skill were beginning to outshine his sister's. She still set the tone of their act and her sparkle and humor drew much of the attention. It was due in part to Fred's careful preparation and strong supporting choreography.

In the 1920s, Fred and Adele appeared on Broadway and on the London stage in shows such as George and Ira Gershwin's “Lady Be Good” and “Funny Face”.

Later in “The Band Wagon”, winning popular acclaim with the theater crowd on both sides of the Atlantic. By then, Astaire's tap dancing was recognized as among the best, as Robert Benchley wrote in 1930, "I don't think that I will plunge the nation into war by stating that Fred is the greatest tap-dancer in the world."

After the close of “Funny Face”, the Astaires went to Hollywood for a screen test (now lost) at Paramount Pictures. They were not considered suitable for films.

They split in 1932 when Adele married her first husband, Lord Charles Arthur Francis Cavendish. Fred Astaire went on to achieve success on his own on Broadway and in London with “Gay Divorce”, while considering offers from Hollywood. The end of the partnership was traumatic for Astaire, but stimulated him to expand his range.

Free of the brother-sister constraints of the former pairing and with a new partner (Claire Luce), he created a romantic partnered dance to Cole Porter's "Night and Day". Luce stated that she had to encourage him to take a more romantic approach: "Come on, Fred, I'm not your sister, you know." The success of the stage play was credited to this number, and when recreated in the film version of the play “The Gay Divorcee”. It ushered in a new era in filmed dance. Recently, film footage taken by Fred Stone of Astaire performing in “Gay Divorce” with Luce's successor, Dorothy Stone. In New York in 1933 was uncovered by dancer and historian Betsy Baytos and now represents the earliest known performance footage of Astaire.
