I Enter The Holy Of Holies-Paul Wilbur

1 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,and of faith in God,

²instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

³And God permitting, we will do so.

⁴It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened,who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,

⁵who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age

⁶and who have fallenaway, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

⁷Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.

⁸But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

⁹Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation.

¹⁰God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

¹¹We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized.

¹²We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

¹³When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,¹⁴saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”

¹⁵And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.

¹⁶People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.

¹⁷Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.

¹⁸God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.

¹⁹We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,

²⁰where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

Zephaniah 1

1 The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:

²“I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.

³“I will sweep away both man and beast; I will sweep away the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea—
and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble.” “When I destroy all mankind on the face of the earth,” declares the Lord,

⁴“I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who live in Jerusalem. I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place, the very names of the idolatrous priests—

⁵those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the Lord
and who also swear by Molek,

⁶those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor inquire of him.”

⁷Be silent before the Sovereign Lord, for the day of the Lord is near. The Lord has prepared a sacrifice; he has consecrated those he has invited.

⁸“On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice I will punish the officials and the king’s sons and all those clad in foreign clothes.

⁹On that day I will punish all who avoid stepping on the threshold, who fill the temple of their gods with violence and deceit.

¹⁰“On that day,” declares the Lord, “a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, wailing from the New Quarter, and a loud crash from the hills.

¹¹Wail, you who live in the market district; all your merchants will be wiped out, all who trade with silver will be destroyed.

¹²At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing,
either good or bad.’

¹³Their wealth will be plundered, their houses demolished. Though they build houses, they will not live in them; though they plant vineyards, they will not drink the wine.”

¹⁴The great day of the Lord is near—near and coming quickly. The cry on the day of the Lord is bitter; the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.

¹⁵That day will be a day of wrath—a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness—

¹⁶a day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the corner towers.

¹⁷“I will bring such distress on all people that they will grope about like those who are blind, because they have sinned against the Lord. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their entrails like dung.

¹⁸Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath.” In the fire of his jealousy the whole earth will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live on the earth.

Leviticus 11

1 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron,

²“Say to the Israelites: ‘Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat:

³You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.

⁴“‘There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you.

⁵The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.

⁶The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.

⁷And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.

⁸You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.

⁹“‘Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams you may eat any that have fins and scales.

¹⁰But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to regard as unclean.

¹¹And since you are to regard them as unclean, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as unclean.

¹²Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be regarded as unclean by you.

¹³“‘These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture,

¹⁴the red kite, any kind of black kite,

¹⁵any kind of raven,

¹⁶the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,

¹⁷the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,

¹⁸the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,

¹⁹the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.

²⁰“‘All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be regarded as unclean by you.

²¹There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground.

²²Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper.

²³But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as unclean.

²⁴“‘You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.

²⁵Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.

²⁶“‘Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean.

²⁷Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.

²⁸Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.These animals are unclean for you.

²⁹“‘Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard,

³⁰the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon.

³¹Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening.

³²When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth.Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean.

³³If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot.

³⁴Any food you are allowed to eat that has come into contact with water from any such pot is unclean, and any liquid that is drunk from such a pot is unclean.

³⁵Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean.

³⁶A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean.

³⁷If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean.

³⁸But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.

³⁹“‘If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean till evening.

⁴⁰Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.

⁴¹“‘Every creature that moves along the ground is to be regarded as unclean; it is not to be eaten.

⁴²You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is unclean.

⁴³Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures.Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them.

⁴⁴I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground.

⁴⁵I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.

⁴⁶“‘These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground.

⁴⁷You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.’”

Hebrews 5

1 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

²He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.

³This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.

⁴And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.

⁵In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”

⁶And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”

⁷During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

⁸Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered

⁹and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him

¹⁰and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

¹¹We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.

¹²In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!

¹³Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.

¹⁴But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Habakkuk 3

²Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.

³God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. His glory covered the heavens and his praise filled the earth.

⁴His splendor was like the sunrise; rays flashed from his hand, where his power was hidden.

⁵Plague went before him; pestilence followed his steps.

¹¹Sun and moon stood still in the heavens at the glint of your flying arrows, at the lightning of your flashing spear.

¹²In wrath you strode through the earth and in anger you threshed the nations.

¹³You came out to deliver your people, to save your anointed one. You crushed the leader of the land of wickedness, you stripped him from head to foot.

¹⁴With his own spear you pierced his head when his warriors stormed out to scatter us, gloating as though about to devour the wretched who were in hiding.

¹⁵You trampled the sea with your horses, churning the great waters.

¹⁶I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.

¹⁷Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls,

¹⁸yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.

¹⁹The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.

Leviticus 10

1 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command.

²So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.

³Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said: “‘Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.’” Aaron remained silent.

⁴Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.”

⁵So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

⁶Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,“Do not let your hair become unkempt and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community. But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn for those the Lord has destroyed by fire.

⁷Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

⁸Then the Lord said to Aaron,

⁹“You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come,

¹⁰so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean,

¹¹and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.”

¹²Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar, for it is most holy.

¹³Eat it in the sanctuary area, because it is your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded.

¹⁴But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place; they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites’ fellowship offerings.

¹⁵The thigh that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering. This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.”

¹⁶When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offeringand found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked,

¹⁷“Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord.

¹⁸Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place, you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.”

¹⁹Aaron replied to Moses, “Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?”

²⁰When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

Hebrews 4

1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.

²For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.

³Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’” And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world.

⁴For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”

⁵And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

⁶Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,

⁷God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

⁸For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.

⁹There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;

¹⁰for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.

¹¹Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

¹²For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

¹³Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

¹⁴Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

¹⁵For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

¹⁶Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Habakkuk 2

1 I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me,
and what answer I am to give to this complaint.

²Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.

³For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.

⁴“See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright—but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness—

⁵indeed, wine betrays him; he is arrogant and never at rest. Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied, he gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples.

⁶“Will not all of them taunt him with ridicule and scorn, saying, “‘Woe to him who piles up stolen goods and makes himself wealthy by extortion! How long must this go on?’

⁷Will not your creditors suddenly arise? Will they not wake up and make you tremble? Then you will become their prey.

⁸Because you have plundered many nations, the peoples who are left will plunder you. For you have shed human blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

⁹“Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,
setting his nest on high to escape the clutches of ruin!

¹⁰You have plotted the ruin of many peoples, shaming your own house and forfeiting your life.

¹¹The stones of the wall will cry out, and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.

¹²“Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by injustice!

¹³Has not the Lord Almighty determined that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire, that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?

¹⁴For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

¹⁵“Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors,
pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!

¹⁶You will be filled with shame instead of glory.
Now it is your turn! Drink and let your nakedness be exposed! The cup from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

¹⁷The violence you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and your destruction of animals will terrify you. For you have shed human blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

¹⁸“Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or an image that teaches lies? For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak.

¹⁹Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’ Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in it.”

²⁰The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.

Hebrews 6
